Our Partnerships

‘Partnership’ is a complex term with many different meanings. Under Water for Life, the Government of Alberta is joining with stakeholders in three different types of partnerships, with different but complementary roles. Watershed Stewardship Groups, Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils, and the Alberta Water Council will share responsibility for identifying and addressing solutions to watershed issues in Alberta.

Alberta WPACs are committed to developing collaborative partnerships with volunteers and organizations that undertake common or complementary activities, and who wish to work together to improve watershed management. Alberta's WPACs embrace a philosophy of shared responsibility, and have set out a number of outcomes and actions that will best be achieved through successful partnerships.

Each partnership involves interested Albertans making recommendations on water issues to the appropriate municipal, provincial and federal governments, individuals, or industries with water and land use planning and decision-making authority or responsibility.

Sharing responsibility through the use of partnerships can provide important benefits to environmental and watershed management. Across Alberta, shared responsibility for watershed management is being achieved through a range of collaborative activities including public consultation, advisory groups, strategic alliances, and community and individual stewardship.
